guest speaker at United States International University-Africa during their Cultural month, segment Mother Language

On March 23, 2026, Jejo foundation was invited as guest speaker at United States International University-Africa during their Cultural month, segment Mother Language . Our discussion focused on a powerful question: How can language be used as a tool to cultivate peace?
As Nelson Mandela wisely said:
“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.”
During a highly interactive session, we examined real-life examples of how language can be used either for destruction or for unity. We reflected on situations where political propaganda and divisive rhetoric have influenced young people toward violence and public unrest, rather than encouraging constructive dialogue and civic engagement.
We also explored inspiring examples where young people chose unity over division, such as the solidarity demonstrated by students in Rwanda, who stood together and rejected narratives that sought to separate them.(Inyange students)
Together, we concluded that language carries immense power and responsibility. We committed ourselves to using our words to build a more peaceful and inclusive society.
Use your language to preserve peace not to destroy it.
Let your words nurture:
• Respect
• Truth
• Accountability
• Forgiveness
• Inclusion
• Dignity for every human being
Let your language become a tool of peace by:
• Speaking before conflict escalates
• Listening across differences
• Resisting propaganda and harmful narratives
• Refusing to normalize exclusion
• Holding leaders accountable for divisive language
Peace begins with the words we choose. May our languages become bridges that connect communities, heal wounds, and inspire future generations to build societies founded on unity, justice, and human dignity.
